All ballet classes follow the Royal Academy of Dance Syllabus.
Classes in Pre School, Pre Primary, Primary, Grades 1 – 8, Vocational – Intermediate Foundation, Intermediate, Advanced Foundation, Advanced One, Advanced Two and Open Ballet are offered.
Dance classes aim to develop children’s co-ordination and musicality. The classes involve movement to music with songs, nursery rhymes and mime – use of props and instruments. These classes are for children aged from 3-5 years of age – a fun introduction to the world of dancing.
Ballet classes are the progression from Pre School Dance for children aged 5. This is an introduction to ballet, still involving mime and musical interpretation, as well as the basics of ballet movement.
Pre Primary, Primary and Grade 1 attend one class per week and from Grade 2 upwards, twice a week, to ensure a high standard is achieved.
Grade 6/Intermediate Foundation
Students progressing from Grade 5 will attend one lesson Grade 6 and one lesson Intermediate Foundation. At this level the RAD syllabi divides like a tree – Grades 6 7 and 8 are based on Romantic ballet and incorporate ballet, free movement and character and the Intermediate Foundation is the beginning of the Vocational branch, which is all classical ballet. The two marry together to give the students a well rounded dance foundation. Both Grade 6 and Intermediate Foundation are two year courses so there will be no examination next year but two the following year. For the girls the Intermediate Foundation introduces the use of pointe shoes. Pointe shoes will be individually fitted in the studio next year. If you have any queries please feel free to email Mrs Barber.
This is open to students from Grade 6 – they will work on different aspects of choreography with Miss Jenna and help choreograph the Dance on Elliot show for 2020. There is no cost for this class and we highly recommend the students participate as it is a fun and inspiring class.
An open Ballet class will again be available taken by Mr Harada. These classes are recommended for students from Grade 5 – these are non examination classes, comprising all free work – essential for all students considering a career in dance. We are extremely lucky to have the services of Mr Harada – himself a dancer and the dance tutor at St Kentigern College.
All Vocational classes involve pointe work and the examinations are designed for students wishing to persue a career in dance. RAD grade and vocational examinations are held at Howick Dance Studio every year. Students need not be entered for examinations and will be progressed normally through the grades, however the studio does encourage the children to enter for the examinations.
